I Spy

When looking at the knotted cords, Rabbi Joseph Caro and Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki (Rashi) each noticed different details.  Rashi first noticed the knots, and Rabbi Caro first noticed the spaces between the knots.  Begin by looking at examples of art with double or ambiguous imagery (e.g., Edgar Rubin, “Hidden Faces and Goblet,” 1915).  What do you see?  Look at an object with an odd shape and share what you see.  What do you notice first, second?  

When I look at the knotted cords, I see….When did you first look seriously at the knotted cords?  What details did you first notice?  Compare your answers to those of others. What does this tell you about objects and perceptions and the conclusions we come to from a quick glance?
