The Biblical Color Tekhelet: What Does it Really Look Like?
The tzitz or crown of the ancient High Priest was kept in place on the forehead with a petil (twisted cord) that was the color tekhelet (blue-purple). According to the Torah, this same cord was attached to the tzitzit. Scholars believe that tekhelet was extracted from a murex snail. They believe it was a shade of blue or purple, some say indigo. A shade of blue has appeared in many modern prayer shawls. Research species of the murex snail and the color they produce. Play with dyes and food coloring. What color would you choose for the true tekhelet?
